rex invasion is set in motion when, early in the premiere, the mystical crystical sun stones, placed on top of buildings to ward off such bellicose beasts, suddenly stop working for no apparent reason. Sometimes the framing looks cockeyed, as if the film were being shown in the wrong aspect ratio maybe it was shot in the HDTV format, even though only a tiny minority of American homes are equipped to see it that way, and ABC doesn't do much HDTV-casting anyway.

Strangely, though, the straight dialogue scenes are often shot in intense close-up.

Yes, the special effects are quite pretty and impressive, especially for a weekly show. rexes, appear on the horizon and everybody finally shuts up and gets in the damn boat. Then a big flock of giant pterodactyls, who act as an aerial entourage for the greedy T. On and on they quarrel - we must go, we can't go, we must go, we dare not go, and so on. David, meanwhile, is zooming around on a flying lizard. Frank says all three of them must go or be trampled into pancakes by the marauding intruders. Karl says he refuses to go unless Marion goes. After Waterfall City has been evacuated, Karl, Marion and cranky Frank find a boat that could carry them out to sea. Karl has fallen for the lovely maid Marion (Georgina Rylance), much to the jealous irritation of brother David, who astutely notes of Dinotopia, "It's different here." Well said, young man. Then he decides this place is a "hellhole" and they've got to get out of it. "This place is another world," he says later. Also along for the chase is their party-pooper father, cranky Frank, played by onetime sitcom staple Michael Brandon. The boys weren't the only ones shipwrecked. The arguments are always about whether to stay in Dinotopia or risk the hazardous Razor Reef that surrounds the island and try to escape. Maybe I was distracted by a piece of pocket lint or a smudge on my coffee table. No, it doesn't make much sense, but maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention. Meanwhile a ragtag tribe of nomadic mountain people, whose leader for some reason speaks with a French accent, moves out of the mountains and into the city.

That means everybody has to evacuate and run into the mountains. rexes are mean and extremely carnivorous, and we learn fairly early in tonight's premiere that they are advancing like an army on dreamy Waterfall City with nothing but dinner and destruction on their walnut-size minds. How do you tell the difference? Well, you wait until the dinosaur gets close, and then if he eats you, he's a bad 'un. Now former soap opera heartthrob Erik von Detten (that sounds like the name of a hairy-backed wrestler) and newcomer Shiloh Strong (that sounds like - oh, who cares?) play the brothers who, shipwrecked, washed up on the shores of the strange, mystical, unexplainable and ultimately very annoying land of Dinotopia, where some of the dinosaurs are friendly and like to chat while others are nasty and like to chomp. When we last left bickering brothers Karl and David Scott, they were played by other actors. And nobody ever seems to notice the little boy has vanished. That seems unnecessarily gruesome for such a lighthearted and even lighter-headed fantasy. Along comes a Tyrannosaurus rex and, chomp, the little boy is a goner. That includes, in the repetitious two-hour premiere tonight (at 8 on Channel 7), a little boy who's outdoors playing ball. It's tentatively recommendable to undemanding kids with a caveat to their parents: The meanest of the dinosaurs have a bad habit of eating people. It's not as if anyone was breathless with anticipation, is it?īasically, "Dinotopia" is just one long chase that's occasionally interrupted for an argument. Introduced last year as a two-part movie special, ABC's "Dinotopia" was originally to premiere weeks ago with other new fall shows, but the unexpected transplanting of "Monk" from its USA Network home to a berth in the ABC prime-time schedule delayed the arrival. "Dinotopia" as a weekly show is no dino-dopier than "Dinotopia" was as a miniseries - but no smarter, either.
